HYA dinner at Nola's

By, Todd Moore

Sometime around, oh, a couple months ago, the HYA gang met for an elaborate dinner at Nola's in Palo Alto. For several years I've walked by the restaurant not having any idea how fantastic t was on the inside. Walking in, this seemingly little hole-in-the-wall opens up to a large Mardi-Gras style atmosphere with lots of bright colors and artwork from New Orleans, LuisiAna or NOLA for short(thus the name) Of course, when there is free food and drink, the HYA members seem to come out of the woodworks. About 12 or so of us squeezed around a table and shared some very interesting drinks and dishes New Orleans style. I didn't recognize half the dishes, but we all shared a little here and there and I can say everything was great. Sharing war stories and experiences is really what it was all about. We spent a good 2 solid hours going over all the different and similar experiences we've all had. To me, one of the greatest things about a support group is thinking you are the only one in the world feeling a certain way or having a certain experience, and then finding out there are others who know just what you are talking about. Going through tough times isn't so bad when you are not alone. Anyone reading this who has not had a chance to meet with the group or is nervous, I can only say that you will be glad you tried it. My fear in joining was, at first, that in hearing all the stories and surrounding myself with a heavy dose of "reality" would make it worse. Remember, nothing can be worse than what your mind will imagine if left alone to ponder the possibilities. I've been fortunate to hear and actually see many success stories within the group. This has given me encouragement beyond any medical journal or doctor's words. If you are thinking of joining a meeting, please come. And hey, where else can you get a free dinner(thanks, sponsors)? ;-)
